Why USC will be #2

August 25, 2009 in Random Slop by The Pig

We had a great opening day for the site. I love all of the action and discussion that is taking place here.  Our current poll asks the question, “Which of these teams will have the highest BCS ranking at the end of the season? 1.Texas  2.USC  3.Alabama 4.Virginia Tech” Some have asked, “Why is Florida not an option?” Well, I believe that Florida will end the season as the #1 team in the nation. I know that people are tired of hearing it, but every path of logic leads to that destination. So, in my mind the greatest competition is for the #2 slot. Currently, the majority of our poll responders seem to think that Texas is most likely to hold that position at the season’s end. I disagree. Here’s my thinking:

  • Virginia Tech – Even if they are able to get past Alabama on week 1 – highly unlikely IMHO – the ACC does not get enough respect within the computer rating system to earn them the #2 position.
  • Alabama – The Crimson Tide is likely to take a loss or two during the regular season. They are good, but the week to week competition of the SEC is not something that they are likely to overcome with a rookie QB. But, suppose they do make it through the regular season. That still means that they have to get by Florida in the SEC championship. A loss that close to the end of the year will keep them out of the #2 spot.
  • Texas – I do believe that they are the best team of the 4. I also believe that they are the most likely team to be facing Florida in the national championship. Losing the last game of the season will not bode well for them staying on the #2 spot.
  • USC – They are a good team, but being in a weaker conference will keep them out of the national championship game. They will win their bowl game and take the #2 spot from Texas when Texas looses to Florida in the national championship and USC wins their bowl game convincingly against a formidable opponent.

And there you have it. Let me know what you think.

You cant say that about the acc. They have 4 teams currently ranked in the top 25. If they remain there, and they likely will, the computers will be good to them. Va Tech plays 3 of those 4 ranked teams. If they go undefeated (not likely) and lose in the BCS title game, they will finish number 2 ahead of USC. Tech has the ESPN rated #1 ranked out of conference schedule this year. Computer rankings will not hold them back if they take care of business.

It depends on how strong the ACC turns out this year. Last year was a bloodbath for the conference, but if upsets happen, VT could get a good spot because they have a championship game to win.

Man I loathe USC. Yeah, they have a WEAK schedule every year, especially compared to Alabama.

Alabama will end up ranked higher by seasons end for the simple fact the don’t have the dawgs this year!! And tech isn’t even worth a preseason 7 ranking, what have they done?
